Review: 2018 Yamaha Mio Aerox S
Now that the hype has died down a bit, Yamaha’s allowed us a couple weeks’ worth of saddle time with their range-topping Mio. I’m not a huge scooter guy myself, with sports bikes taking up most of the space on my laptop’s wallpaper folder. From the sharp lines to the wide-profile tires, it looked every bit the part of the ‘sporty scooter’ as Yamaha is saying in its sales pitch. The LED headlight is mean and intimidating, and the bodywork has enough angles that it wouldn’t look out of place in a geometry textbook.
One issue of the Aerox that has people talking is its frame, which offers tight space for the rider’s feet, so getting on and off is a bit more of a challenge. I tested this out myself, and I ended up swinging a leg over it as I would with a ‘regular’ motorcycle, in fear of hitting something with my foot by passing through the cramped middle area, which might cause the bike to fall.
Those I’ve taken on the back of the Aerox S remark how comfortable it is and how the passenger foot pegs don’t make legs spread too wide. Even with sporty traits, the Aerox S’ engine stays economical, thanks to Yamaha’s Blue Core technology.
The suspension isn’t anything fancy, with no brands being thrown around on the spec sheet, but it was enough to have a blast in the corners of Marilaque, especially with the wide, sporty tires. Braking is adequate, and the ABS came in handy in providing riding confidence amidst torrential rains on the mountains of Quezon. There’s also a dial assembly that lets you turn the scooter ‘on’ and ‘off,’ open the fuel door and seat storage, as well as lock the steering. Storage is bountiful on the Aerox S, with an under-seat compartment that can accommodate my school stuff plus takeout food, or even a full-face helmet.
The Aerox S also features a neat storage cubby/glove compartment up front which can store small items, like the key, my phone, and wallet. The most stress I’ve felt while on the Aerox S was when I was frantically looking for a roadside fuel vendor along Marilaque as the low-fuel light flashed as if to nag me about my poor decisions.

Sampai saat ini setidaknya dia masih menikmati pasar sendirian, Honda dan Suzuki belum memiliki tanda-tanda menghadirkan lawannya. Sebelum lahir versi mesin 4-tak 155 cc yang kita tahu sekarang, ternyata garpu tala pernah memproduksi model 2-tak.
Tak selang lama permintaan akan Aerox meningkat, Yamaha pun membuat terobosan atau pilihan mesin baru berkubikasi 100 cc namun tetap menggunakan konstruksi jantung pacu 2-tak. Sayang, kiprahnya harus terhenti di 2003 karena tak lagi bisa menyesuaikan dengan standar dan aturan soal emisi gas buang. Seiring berjalannya waktu, mesin 2-tak akhirnya ditinggalkan pabrikan dan diganti dengan jantung pacu baru yang lebih modern. Nama Aerox cukup punya panggung di benua biru, tentu Yamaha tak mau menyia-nyiakan itu dengan menyuntik mati karena alasan regulasi emisi.
Di 2013 matik sporty tersebut dikonversi menjadi 4-tak yang secara otomatis menghadirkan generasi keduanya dengan nama Aerox R. Eksistensi Yamaha Aerox membuat namanya tersohor di beberapa negara, prinsipal lantas menetaskan generasi ketiganya yang saat itu mulai dikapalkan ke luar pasar Eropa. Napasnya di pasar Indonesia sayang tak lama hanya bertahan 1 tahun, saat itu YIMM secara diam-diam menyuntik mati motor tersebut.
Ternyata di balik strategi tak lagi menjual Aerox 125 LC, Yamaha Indonesia menyiapkan produk yang lebih advanced, canggih, dan powerful untuk konsumennya. Di November 2016 mereka memanfaatkan lantai Indonesia Motorcycle Show (IMOS) untuk meluncurkan Aerox 155 berteknologi VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) dan Blue Core. Empat tahun cukup bagi Yamaha menjual Aerox 155 VVA, generasi terbaru atau kelimanya hadir di November 2020 yang bukan cuma merevisi tampilan, namun menyempurnakan sektor performa dan fiturnya.
Selain itu, aplikasi Y-Connect juga memiliki fitur Rank yang menghibur bagi konsumen dalam menikmati aktivitas berkendaranya, sebab mereka dapat saling berkompetisi dengan sesama pengguna CCU model (motor Yamaha yang memiliki fitur Y-Connect) dalam hal jarak tempuh dan poin eco riding.

Yamaha unleashes the new P122,900 Mio Aerox S
Broadcasted live on social media, the launch of Yamaha’s latest addition to the Mio family was hosted by Pinoy VJ Robi Domingo, who is a proud Aerox rider. The World Hip Hop Dance Champions, Upeepz, helped break some of the tension and ease the suspense at this huge event. Ryan Jude Camus, YMPH senior marketing manager,showed us around the new Aerox and reassured everyone that the Stop/Start system would not affect the bike’s battery life because it’s protected with a fail-proof technology. Like how many ‘hype’ sneakers are released, a limited number of the Aerox S, 155 units to be exact, has been made available through a webpage where customers may make reservations.
