Features Of Yamaha Aerox 155

Fused with modernity, sleek structure and built-in strength, the Yamaha Aerox 155 comes with the most powerful engine known so far.

Yamaha Aerox 155 Review: Style and substance

Nowadays, almost every automaker is coming out with new products with the promise of offering something unique and different from the rest. Instead of having turn indicators sticking out of the body like most other two-wheelers, the Aerox has them embedded in the front apron itself.

Coming to the performance of the headlamps, it is satisfactory and switching to high beam really does extend your vision by a lot.

Many times, performance-oriented two-wheelers in and around this price mark have fancy headlights that are really bright but fail to have a good throw. Having said that, my favourite has to be the Racing Blue colour scheme that our review unit was sporting. The seat cushion is decently wide and long, providing enough space for the rider and the pillion as well.

The Aerox 155 boasts 24.5 litres of storage space and it is enough to engulf most full-faced helmets without an issue. It shows a lot of information including the average fuel economy, two trip meters, battery voltage and more but I just wish that the display was brighter.

The result of this mixture is a potent and refined engine that has plenty of room to breathe.

When you twist the accelerator, the scooter won’t try to violently throw you off but you do climb speeds in a linear manner. While the climb from 90kmph onward is slower, the scooter can sit at triple-digit speeds all day long. At no point did the scooter bottom out while riding over speed breakers or going over badly broken roads.

I understand that this is a performance scooter and a stiff suspension is to be expected but I do feel that Yamaha could have made it a touch more comfortable and not lost on cornering capabilities substantially. However, the rear only gets a 130mm drum which is visibly lacking in stopping power compared to the front disc. The amazing engine paired with the comfortable ergonomics makes it a great ride for long highway jaunts. Yes, the scooter will not be your prime choice for riding on bad roads and it misses out on some small features.

Priced at Rs 1.32 lakh (ex-showroom), the Aerox 155 is one of the more expensive scooters being sold in India but it is not too far from the Aprilia SR160. For the price you pay, you get unmatched performance and a scooter that boasts of a unique and somewhat exotic design.

2023 Yamaha Aerox 155 : Price, Images, Specs & Reviews

The Yamaha Aerox 155 is packed with interesting and attractive features like VVA-equipped Engine, LCD Instrument Console, front disc brakes and so on. The central spine of the bike runs high along the floorboard, which is not flat in shape and therefore, space is limited. The underseat storage capacity of the bike is 24.5 litres, which is still inadequate to store a full-face helmet. The bike features an LCD instrument console paired with a REV counter and the display shows adequate information including trip metre, odometer, fuel consumption readouts.

The acceleration of this bike is linear and the rider can reach triple digit speed in no time, without any effort. Under normal city conditions, the scooter has ample power to keep ahead of many other two-wheeled commuters and on the highway, the Yamaha Aerox 155 settles into a steady cruise.

Powered by a 155cc, four-valve, single cylinder engine, the Yamaha Aerox 155 features a VVA (Variable Valve Actuation). The adequate stopping power comes from the 130mm rear drum and 230mm front disc brake with ABS.

The headlights and the tail-lights of the scooter make up the LED unit and it also integrates a fully-digital instrumentation. The digital cluster displays a good deal of information including fuel consumption and trip-related data, along with a tachometer and VVA indicator. Controls for music playback and on-screen navigation instructions are unavailable in this model, but it still comes with SMS and call alerts. Being an affordable street commuting bike, this scooter is a must-buy for anyone looking for convenient and quick city transport.

It might not feel quick off the line, but once it crosses 5000rpm and the VVA kicks in, the digits on the speedo reads 100kmph faster than you’d expect. The chunky tyres it comes with offer decent grip while the suspension is on the stiffer side to complement spirited riding. While the setup does feel a bit jarring at higher speeds over bridge joints and squarish bumps, it felt quite pliable over regular road undulations and potholes under 60kmph.

Yamaha Aerox 155 review, road test – Introduction

Not all that long ago, a 150cc motorcycle was considered a performance bike in India; today, a 650cc twin is an hourly sighting in the metros. Its step-through format means that it immediately stands out from the ocean of flat floorboards in India, and while it is a unique form-factor, it’s also certain to prove prohibitive for many buyers looking for a more practical machine. With nicely sculpted bodywork and mean-looking LED headlights, the Aerox has a fittingly villainous fascia to go with its sporty intent.

14-inch wheels at both ends wrapped in very chunky tyres, a meaty exhaust system and twin shock absorbers at the rear all add to the substance, and the Aerox has quite a lot of presence on our roads, which belies its slender 126kg kerb weight.

There are also some inconsistent panel gaps and shut lines across the scooter, and Yamaha would do well to tidy up these blemishes, considering the Aerox’s position in the market. The design of the front apron means that it will constantly foul the knees of taller riders, and you can’t slide back too far on the seat because of the prominent step on it.

We’re glad to report that LED headlights on mass-market two-wheelers are getting better and better, and the Aerox’s unit also performs quite well, with good brightness and spread. The digital cluster also shows a good deal of information, with the usual trip and fuel consumption related data as well as a VVA indicator and a tachometer. You don’t get on-screen navigation instructions or controls for music playback, but you do get call and SMS alerts, and can also check your last parked location as well as use your mobile phone as an auxiliary dashboard for the scooter, among other things. A heart that’s been transplanted, because the liquid-cooled, 4-valve 155cc motor in the Aerox is quite heavily derived from the R15’s engine, and even gets VVA technology just like its sportsbike sibling. With a healthy (by scooter standards) 15hp on tap, of course it feels zippy in the city, effortlessly seizing gaps in traffic and shrinking the distances between stop lights. The sheer grunt of it means that you don’t need to use very large throttle openings to get around, and when ridden with a careful right hand, the Aerox can even deliver as high as 50kpl in the city.

And even when you’re caught napping when the signal turns green, the Aerox has your back, bringing the motor to life in an instant when you twist the throttle, thanks to an integrated starter generator unit.. In comparison to the featherlight, quick-turning scooters that we’re used to riding, the Aerox feels distinctly more heavy-steering, and requires some effort to tip into bends.

It feels more like its 126kg kerb weight at low speeds, there’s loads of steering lock available, and even though its 790mm seat height is slightly taller than most scooters, it’s still quite accessible. Unlike most petrol scooters in India that use a monoshock, the Aerox gets twin shock absorbers at the rear, and they are set up on the firmer side.

Yamaha Aerox 155 review, first ride

The front apron mimics a bike’s fairing and houses twin LED headlamps complete with DRLs. Yamaha is also offering the company’s Y-Connect Bluetooth suite at an additional cost. The fuel tank sits on the central spine and is operable by the multifunction key switch. There is a small cubbyhole on the front apron which can house your mobile phone. The underseat storage bin is huge and can accommodate a full face helmet. In place of the usual floor board, the scooter has a central spine running.

This section also houses the 5.5 litre fuel tank which can be opened via a switch provided in the ignition key console. On the downside, certain plastic fixtures like the fuel filler and cubbyhole lid feel flimsy. Thanks to the central spine section one has to swing the leg over to mount the scoot.

A full face international spec helmet can be stored in it and that to us is a win. The rear section looks muscular and very much like a motorcycle thanks to its twin shock set up. Bottom line is that on the Aerox, you will never feel the lack of power and performance.

High speed stability is epic and even at 100kmph plus, the scooter feels planted. It is the kind of scooter where one does not want to slow down on speed humps and just enjoy the jump!

The verdict then is that the Aerox is for the enthusiast who was not being allowed a motorcycle and yet does not want to miss out on the joys.
